Using the Elvira 2 pattern by GE Designs from the Stripology Mixology 3 book, Diane Quirk transformed the Merrily On High fabric collection by Jackie MacDonald of Sweetfire Road for Moda Fabrics into a lively composition of color, print, and direction. Reds, pinks, greens, winter whites, and warm gingerbread browns move across the quilt in broad vertical sections, interrupted by angled bands that send the eye traveling from one area to the next.

That geometry gives each fabric room to make its own contribution. Poinsettias bring bold floral scale, snowflakes and greenery add seasonal texture, and the playful gingerbread and candy prints introduce moments of discovery throughout the design. The warm brown accents act almost like pathways, creating visual connections across fabrics that might otherwise read as separate blocks of color.

Quilting by The Wandering Thread adds another layer of movement without competing with the piecing, allowing the strong graphic structure and cheerful prints to remain at the forefront.

What makes this exhibit especially interesting is how confidently it balances order with playfulness. The construction is deliberate, but the overall impression feels spontaneous—proof that a carefully chosen pattern can give a collection an entirely new voice.
