CURATOR'S NOTES

Some works begin with a pattern. Others begin with a technique, a classroom, and the willingness to explore where the process might lead.
Bonnie Sick created this striking runner during a class called New York Beauty. Although the original pattern name is unknown, the celebrated New York Beauty form is unmistakable in its sweeping curves and finely pieced points. Bonnie arranged the blocks asymmetrically across an expansive neutral background, allowing each circular motif to appear almost as if it is drifting through the composition.
Fabrics from Steve Baker’s Wisps on the Wind collection for QT Fabrics bring together airy botanical textures, deep teal, soft blue, warm brown, and quiet cream. The scattered rectangular accents echo the quilt’s modern movement while giving the eye a pathway from one New York Beauty block to the next.
Laura Phillips of A Wandering Thread completed the piece with flowing, continuous quilting that curls through the open background and crosses the pieced forms. The stitching adds another layer of movement without overwhelming Bonnie’s precise construction, creating a finished work that feels both structured and free.
