A Maker’s Quilt of Awakening by Stacey Bumgardner

Some quilts tell their story through a single fabric collection. This one tells its story through the choices made along the way. Pieced and quilted by Stacey Bumgardner, this version of A Maker’s Quilt of Awakening brings together a scrappy assortment of fabrics selected from a variety of collections. Soft aquas, corals, warm golds, deep greens, and richly patterned prints move across an open white background, allowing each block to hold its own personality while still contributing to the larger composition. Repeated stars, pinwheels, flying geese, churn-dash-inspired blocks, patchwork strips, and unexpected fragments create the feeling of a sampler without making the quilt feel confined by repetition. Designed by Lisa Baker at SewEndipitous®, A Maker’s Quilt of Awakening is created specifically for students in The Beginners Quilting Course and is not offered as a standalone pattern. Its varied construction gives students the opportunity to build skills while gradually seeing individual techniques become part of something much larger. Stacey’s fabric choices make that idea especially visible. Rather than relying on a coordinated collection to establish harmony, she created it herself—balancing color, value, scale, and pattern across dozens of individual decisions. Her quilting adds another layer of movement, with sweeping curves and feather-like forms flowing through the generous negative space and tying the many pieced elements together. The finished quilt feels less like a collection of exercises and more like a record of creative growth. And perhaps that is the most fitting interpretation of a quilt called A Maker’s Quilt of Awakening: the techniques may be taught, but the voice that emerges belongs to the artist. |
