Valor at the Center

|
Valor at the Center carries its meaning in both its composition and its purpose. Pieced by Bonnie Sick using Scott Flanagan’s Stretched Star Sampler pattern, the quilt transforms a collection of assorted patriotic fabrics into a composition that feels simultaneously energetic and ordered. Reds and deep blues move across a generous field of white, creating stars, angular fragments, and shifting geometric pathways that continually draw the eye inward. The distribution of color is particularly effective. The outer corners carry heavier concentrations of patriotic prints, while the center gradually gathers those same reds and blues into a stronger, more deliberate structure. Between them, expanses of white provide visual breathing room and allow the individual pieced shapes to remain distinct rather than competing with one another. At the very heart of the quilt is its most personal detail: a custom embroidered American Eagle. Set within the central white block, the eagle becomes more than a decorative addition. Its placement gives the entire composition a visual and symbolic focal point, surrounded by layers of red, white, and blue piecing that seem almost to radiate outward from it. The quilting by Laura Phillips of The Wandering Thread introduces another quieter layer to the work. Large outlined stars and softly traveling curves move across the white background, becoming more apparent as the viewer steps closer. From a distance, the piecing commands attention; up close, the quilting reveals an additional field of stars embedded within the surface. That relationship between distance and detail feels especially appropriate for a quilt made with a purpose beyond display. Valor at the Center is intended to be presented to a veteran through the local Quilts of Valor program. In that context, every element takes on added significance—the patriotic palette, the stars appearing throughout both fabric and quilting, and especially the eagle positioned at the center. The result is a quilt that works beautifully as textile art while also carrying something deeply human within its stitches: recognition, gratitude, and the intention that this work will ultimately belong to someone whose service it was created to honor. |
