CURATOR'S NOTES

Sometimes repetition creates uniformity. Here, it creates possibility.

For Rockwood, Elizabeth Hamilton uses the geometric structure of the Rockwood quilt pattern by The Blanket Statement almost like a framework for a series of individual color studies. Rather than asking the repeated block to disappear into one continuous design, she allows each grouping to establish its own personality through a carefully curated selection of Ruby Star Society fabrics.

Moving across the quilt is much like moving through a palette. Soft pinks give way to saturated oranges and glowing yellows; vivid greens transition into cool aquas and blues before the composition deepens into purples, blacks, creams, and another burst of pink. Some sections rely on close-value combinations that make the piecing feel almost seamless, while others use dramatic contrast to reveal the underlying geometry immediately. The same construction appears again and again, yet it rarely feels repeated.

The fabrics contribute another layer of discovery. Florals, tiny novelty motifs, graphic patterns, celestial imagery, birds, and unexpected details reward a closer look while the larger blocks maintain enough visual strength to be appreciated from across the room. Even the striped binding participates in the composition, quietly collecting many of the colors found throughout the quilt into one final frame.

Trace Creek Quilting adds a continuous layer of movement across those changing palettes. The curved quilting lines soften the strong angles of the piecing without competing with them, creating a subtle visual conversation between geometry and motion.

Rockwood is a wonderful reminder that a quilt pattern provides structure, but the artist determines the experience. Through color, scale, contrast, and fabric selection, Elizabeth has taken one repeated idea and allowed it to become many.
