CURATOR'S NOTES
There is something wonderfully compelling about taking a familiar quilting idea and asking it to behave a little differently. Sonya’s Modified Rail Fence begins with the recognizable language of the rail fence block, then rearranges that vocabulary into a composition that feels architectural, layered, and distinctly its own.
Both pieced and quilted by Sonya Hunter, this exhibit features Wisps on the Wind, designed by Steve Baker for QT Fabrics. Its palette of weathered blues, soft aqua, warm ochre, cream, and deep brown gives the piece a calm sophistication while providing enough contrast for its interlocking geometry to command attention.
The traditional rail fence is built upon strips and repetition, but Sonya’s interpretation pushes those elements beyond a simple grid. Groups of fabric appear almost framed within one another, while dark brown lines travel through the composition like pathways, connecting one section to the next. Small triangular turns interrupt those lines at just the right moments, creating the visual suggestion that the blocks are weaving over, under, around, and through one another.
That movement is particularly striking when the quilt is viewed as a whole. There is no obvious single place for the eye to settle. Instead, the composition encourages exploration. Follow one brown pathway and it leads into another block; follow a band of blue and it disappears behind cream before emerging somewhere else. What could have been a highly repetitive design instead becomes an intricate visual journey.
The fabric adds another dimension to that journey. The varied prints within Wisps on the Wind move between delicate organic imagery, linear marks, abstract forms, and textural motifs. By arranging them within repeated strips, Sonya allows those individual designs to remain visible while also turning them into components of a much larger graphic statement.
Of particular note is the quilting itself. Because Sonya quilted the piece as well as pieced it, there is a remarkable conversation between the surface design and the construction beneath it. The quilting follows an angular, almost labyrinth-like path across the quilt, reinforcing the architectural character of the piecing rather than competing with it. In quieter areas, those stitched lines become especially visible, adding another geometric layer that only fully reveals itself when viewed up close.
And that may be one of the most successful qualities of this work: it rewards distance and intimacy differently. From across the room, Sonya’s Modified Rail Fence reads as a strong, interconnected geometric composition. Move closer, and the individual fabrics, quilting lines, subtle color changes, and tiny construction decisions begin to emerge.
It is a beautiful example of how modification can become authorship. A familiar quilting structure provides the starting point, but personal choices in arrangement, color, fabric, and quilting transform it into something unmistakably individual.
