Northwoods Mosaic
|
Northwoods Mosaic brings together the familiar visual language of a woodland retreat—evergreens, wildlife, pinecones, plaids, and muted natural color—then organizes those elements into a composition that feels almost architectural.
Pieced by Debbie Hollis using fabrics from Deb Strain’s Northwoods Lodge collection for Moda Fabrics, the quilt moves between large scenic areas and smaller blocks of pattern and color. Rather than allowing the collection’s illustrated prints to dominate, Debbie uses them as points of emphasis within a larger framework of greens, browns, soft blues, creams, and deep navy.
The muted green sashing is especially important to the composition. It functions almost like the mullions of a window, separating individual fabric moments while connecting them into one continuous field. Through those divisions, bears, deer, moose, pine forests, pinecones, and rustic plaids appear in changing scales—some immediately recognizable, others becoming part of the overall texture.
The larger wildlife prints act as natural pauses within the quilt. They give the eye somewhere to settle before moving again through the surrounding patchwork. Smaller coordinates then create rhythm between those scenes, allowing the composition to feel varied without becoming visually fragmented.
The soft blue outer border provides an unexpected finishing note. Against the deeper greens and browns of the interior, it opens the composition and echoes the pale skies that appear within the scenic prints. The darker binding then brings definition back to the perimeter.
Quilting by Sonja Panov of Quilting Sew Sweet adds another layer of movement across the structured piecing. Loose, organic bear claw curves travel over the geometric framework, softening its straight lines and reinforcing the natural imagery found throughout the fabrics. In the close details, the quilting becomes particularly visible across the solid and tonal areas, where texture can take its own place within the design.
What makes Northwoods Mosaic especially engaging is its balance between representation and abstraction. From across the room, the quilt reads as an arrangement of proportion, color, and repeated rectangular forms. Step closer, and an entire woodland environment begins to emerge within those shapes.
The result feels less like a single scenic image and more like a collection of glimpses—quiet fragments of the outdoors gathered together and given structure through cloth.
