Felicity: A Big Block 3-Yard Quilt Art Exhibit

Sometimes the character of a quilt comes not from a single coordinated collection, but from the conversation created when different fabrics find their way into the same design.

Pieced by Melissa Delery, Felicity is based on the pattern of the same name from Fabric Cafe’s Big Block 3-Yard Quilts. Rather than relying on one identified fabric collection, Melissa brought together fabrics from a variety of sources, allowing color, print, and contrast to establish their own relationship within the structure of the pattern.

The oversized block design gives each fabric room to be seen while creating a strong visual rhythm across the quilt. Repetition provides order, but the changing prints keep the composition active, demonstrating how a familiar pattern can take on an entirely individual personality through the maker’s fabric choices.

Susan Scott’s quilting adds another layer to the finished work, bringing texture and movement across the larger shapes and helping unite the varied fabrics into a cohesive whole.

Felicity is a wonderful example of one of quilting’s enduring strengths: beautiful work does not require every fabric to begin as part of the same collection. In the hands of an artist, fabrics gathered from different places can become something entirely new—connected not by where they began, but by the vision that brought them together.
