CURATOR'S NOTES

Lori Goes Runway brings quilting out of the traditional display space and into the language of fashion, transforming fabric into a wearable piece of textile art.
Created by Lori Baker for Lisa Baker (pictured), this tailored vest features a cheater quilt fabric from the Quilting in Bloom Fabric Collection designed by Lorelai Kuecker for Northcott Fabrics. The fabric gives the garment the charm of pieced quilt blocks while allowing the overall silhouette to remain soft, flowing, and wearable.
What makes this exhibit especially engaging is the way it bridges two familiar maker worlds. It is not simply a quilt, and it is not simply a garment. It lives beautifully between the two — a piece that celebrates the graphic rhythm of quilt design while embracing the movement and personality of clothing.
The soft aqua, coral, pink, and white palette gives the vest a fresh, garden-inspired feeling, while the cheater quilt layout creates the impression of carefully arranged patchwork. Seen from the front, back, and close-up, the piece reveals how fabric placement can shape the personality of a garment just as much as cut or construction.
There was no pattern used for this creation, which makes the work feel even more personal. Lori’s choices allowed the fabric itself to guide the final form, resulting in a one-of-a-kind piece made for Lisa and rooted in both creativity and affection.
Lori Goes Runway reminds us that quilting does not have to stay on the wall, the bed, or the table. Sometimes it steps into the room, wraps around a person, and becomes part of the story being lived.
