Freestanding Pumpkin | SewEndipitous® Art Exhibit

|
| Embroidery does not always have to remain flat. In Gilded Harvest Freestanding Pumpkin, Bonnie Sick transforms thread and fabric into a dimensional piece of fiber art using an OESD Free Standing Pumpkin design. What begins at the embroidery machine as individual stitched components ultimately becomes something sculptural—a pumpkin built not simply from fabric, but from structure created through embroidery itself. The piece immediately draws attention through its combination of soft autumn color and intricate olive-green threadwork. Fabric panels in subtle creams, golds, rusts, and muted lavender provide the body of the pumpkin, while embroidered vines and leaves travel across their surfaces. Rather than merely decorating the fabric, the embroidery begins to define its architecture. It is the freestanding lace that makes the piece especially compelling. Elaborately stitched ribs frame each pumpkin section, creating both visual separation and physical structure. Open areas within the embroidery allow light and space to become part of the design, while tiny stitched details reward a much closer look. At the top, the lace becomes increasingly architectural, rising into an openwork stem surrounded by beautifully dimensional leaves. Those leaves are particularly effective because they refuse to lie politely against the surface. They project outward, overlap the pumpkin, and cast their own shadows. Even the curling embroidered vine appears to escape from the body of the piece. The result is something that feels organic despite being created through remarkably precise machine embroidery. Viewed from above, another dimension is revealed. The open lace structure creates an lantern-like form, and when illuminated from within, light filters through the embroidered openings and transforms the pumpkin yet again. What appears decorative from the outside becomes structural, transparent, and unexpectedly atmospheric. That transformation is part of what makes this exhibit important within the SewEndipitous® Art Exhibits. Fiber art is not defined by one technique, one surface, or even two dimensions. Thread can become line. Fabric can become form. Embroidery can become architecture. Bonnie's Gilded Harvest is a lovely reminder that sometimes the most interesting thing we can do with a familiar technique is simply ask it to stand up. |
