CURATOR'S NOTES

At first glance, Elizabeth’s Scrappy Rectangles feels wonderfully uncomplicated: repeating shapes, familiar construction, and an assortment of fabrics gathered together without any obvious obligation to match. Look longer, however, and the simplicity begins to reveal something much richer.

Pieced by Elizabeth Hamilton and quilted by Trace Creek Quilting, this smaller-scale work celebrates the creative possibilities found in letting difference become part of the design. Prints, colors, and personalities that may never have been intended to share the same composition find common ground through repetition and rhythm. Rather than asking every fabric to coordinate perfectly, Elizabeth allows each one to retain its individuality while contributing to something larger.

That is where this piece becomes particularly compelling. The straightforward geometry provides structure, but the scrappy fabric selection supplies the conversation. Unexpected neighbors create contrast. Repeated forms create continuity. What could easily become visual disorder instead develops its own balance simply because the maker trusted the process long enough to see where it would lead.

Its modest size only strengthens the point. Elizabeth’s Scrappy Rectangles does not need grandeur or complexity to command attention. It demonstrates one of quilting’s most enduring lessons: remarkable work can emerge from ordinary shapes, leftover pieces, and combinations we might never have chosen deliberately.

Perhaps that is also why the quilt feels so human. Harmony does not always require sameness.

Sometimes diversity is the design.
