Discover the Stripology® System by Gudrun Erla
Stripology® is more than a quilting ruler—it is a complete cutting system created by Gudrun Erla of GE Designs to help quilters cut fabric faster, more accurately, and with less frustration. Designed around strategically placed cutting slots, clear markings, and efficient techniques, Stripology® rulers make it easier to cut multiple strips, squares, rectangles, triangles, diamonds, and other common quilting shapes with greater consistency.
For quilters who have ever battled ruler movement, repeated measuring, uneven strips, or a cutting session that seems to take longer than the sewing itself, Stripology® offers a smarter approach. Gudrun designed the system after recognizing many of the same cutting challenges quilters encounter every day, then built a family of rulers, patterns, books, and teaching resources around solving them.
Stripology® Rulers for Smarter Fabric Cutting
The Stripology® ruler family includes multiple sizes designed for different cutting needs, from width-of-fabric strips and larger cuts to smaller blocks, trimming, and detailed piecing. Depending on the ruler, makers can work with half-inch, quarter-inch, and even smaller increments while using built-in guides for many commonly used quilting units.
Stripology® rulers can be used for far more than simply cutting strips. Gudrun’s techniques extend to squares, rectangles, triangles, diamonds, Half-Square Triangles, Quarter-Square Triangles, Flying Geese, and other piecing units, making the rulers versatile tools for both everyday quilting and more advanced projects.
GE Designs Patterns & Books by Gudrun Erla
One of the things that makes the Stripology® system especially useful is the way Gudrun Erla designs quilts with efficient cutting in mind. GE Designs patterns and books frequently pair clever construction methods with Stripology® techniques, helping quilters move from fabric selection to finished blocks with fewer unnecessary steps.
The GE Designs library includes individual quilt patterns along with Stripology® books devoted to techniques, ruler mastery, and project inspiration. Whether you enjoy modern geometric designs, stash-friendly projects, precut-friendly quilts, or simply want to improve your cutting skills, Gudrun’s approachable style makes it easier to learn by doing.
Why Quilters Love Stripology®
Stripology® was created to remove some of the repetitive measuring and ruler repositioning involved in traditional rotary cutting. The ruler’s slotted design allows multiple cuts to be made from a single ruler placement, while Creative Grids® non-slip technology helps keep the ruler securely positioned on the fabric.
That combination can make Stripology® especially helpful when cutting:
Width-of-fabric strips
Jelly Roll-style strips
Squares and rectangles
Quilt block components
Half-Square and Quarter-Square Triangles
Flying Geese units
Diamonds and angled shapes
Repetitive cuts for larger quilts
Scraps and stash fabrics
Precut-friendly projects
The result is a cutting process designed to feel more efficient, consistent, and approachable.
Meet Gudrun Erla & GE Designs
Gudrun Erla is a quilt designer, author, teacher, and the creator of the Stripology® ruler system. Originally from Iceland, Gudrun began quilting as a young adult and eventually built GE Designs around her love of quilting, teaching, pattern design, and finding simpler ways to accomplish traditionally time-consuming tasks.
Her design philosophy combines fresh quilt designs with practical techniques intended to make quilting easier and more enjoyable. Over time, Stripology® grew from a single ruler concept into a larger system of rulers, patterns, books, tutorials, classes, and supporting tools used by quilters around the world.
SewEndipitous® Maker’s Note:
We love quilting tools that earn their place on the cutting table, and Stripology® is one of those systems that can genuinely change the way you approach fabric preparation. What begins as a convenient way to cut strips quickly soon becomes a surprisingly versatile method for tackling blocks, subcuts, precuts, and repeat units with greater confidence.
Pair that efficiency with Gudrun Erla’s distinctive patterns and teaching style, and you have a system that works especially well for makers who appreciate precision but would rather spend more of their creative time sewing than measuring.
Whether you are purchasing your first Stripology® ruler, adding another size to your collection, exploring a new GE Designs pattern, or learning techniques from one of Gudrun’s books, there is always another clever way to put these tools to work.
Frequently Asked Questions:
What is a Stripology® ruler?
Stripology® rulers are slotted quilting rulers designed by Gudrun Erla of GE Designs. The slots allow quilters to make multiple rotary cuts without repeatedly repositioning the ruler, helping make fabric cutting faster and more consistent.
Who designed Stripology® rulers?
Stripology® was created by quilt designer and educator Gudrun Erla, founder of GE Designs.
Are Stripology® rulers only for cutting strips?
No. In addition to strips, Stripology® rulers can be used for squares, rectangles, triangles, diamonds, Half-Square Triangles, Quarter-Square Triangles, Flying Geese, block trimming, and many other common quilting cuts.
Which Stripology® ruler should I start with?
The best ruler depends on the types of projects you make and the size of your cutting space. The larger Stripology® rulers are especially useful for width-of-fabric cutting and larger pieces, while the smaller rulers are convenient for trimming, smaller blocks, classes, and more detailed cutting.
Can beginners use Stripology® rulers?
Yes. Stripology® can be used by beginners as well as experienced quilters. The system is supported by books, tutorials, patterns, and instructional resources designed to help makers learn the techniques gradually.
Do GE Designs patterns require a Stripology® ruler?
Requirements vary by pattern. Many GE Designs patterns are designed to take advantage of Stripology® cutting methods, while some may also be completed using traditional quilting rulers. Always check the individual pattern requirements before beginning.
What can I find from GE Designs at SewEndipitous®?
Our selection may include Stripology® rulers, GE Designs quilt patterns, books, and related quilting tools designed to make cutting, piecing, and project preparation more efficient.
Can Stripology® rulers be used with precuts?
Yes. Stripology® techniques work well with many precut formats as well as yardage and scraps, making the system useful for everything from coordinated fabric collections to stash-driven projects.
Why use Stripology® instead of a traditional quilting ruler?
Traditional rulers remain useful quilting tools, but Stripology® is designed to reduce repeated measuring and ruler repositioning when making multiple or repetitive cuts. For many quilters, that can mean a faster and more consistent cutting process.
