Covered Bridges | SewEndipitous® Art Exhibit
Some quilts preserve a pattern. Others preserve a place. Covered Bridges, designed, pieced, and quilted by Mary Garmany, feels less like a traditional quilt composition and more like a lovingly assembled collection of memories from the American countryside. Using the Headin’ Home fabric collection, designed by Beth Albert for Elizabeth Studio, Mary created an original arrangement that turns scenic fabric into a visual journey through barns, farmhouses, rural landscapes, and the covered bridges that give the exhibit its name. Rather than relying on a published pattern, Mary developed the composition herself, allowing the imagery in the fabric to determine the structure of the piece. Individual scenes are framed almost like photographs or postcards, each one given its own place within the larger story. Dark sashing creates strong separation between the vignettes, while the earthy browns, weathered reds, greens, and soft sky blues give the quilt the familiar warmth of rural Americana. The large central landscape becomes the heart of the composition. Across it are the words: “You Can Build a House with Wood and Stone But Only Love can Build a Home.” That sentiment changes the way the entire quilt is viewed. What might first appear to be a celebration of barns and bridges becomes something more personal—a reflection on home, belonging, memory, and the landscapes that become part of who we are. Around that central scene, smaller images of covered bridges and farm structures create the feeling of traveling from one place to another. Some sit beneath summer skies, others among autumn foliage or winter snow. Together, they suggest not one particular moment, but the passage of seasons and years. Mary’s quilting adds another layer of movement across the surface without competing with the detailed imagery. The stitched curves soften the architectural lines of the buildings and bridges while quietly connecting the many individual scenes into a unified work. There is something especially fitting about the covered bridge as the subject of a quilt. Both are structures built from individual pieces, carefully joined together for strength. Both carry people from one place to another. And both can endure long enough to become part of the stories families tell. In Covered Bridges, Mary has taken a fabric collection filled with rural imagery and transformed it into something distinctly her own—a textile landscape that feels nostalgic without being merely sentimental, and a reminder that sometimes the most meaningful journeys are the ones that lead us home. |
