Christmas, Piece by Piece

|
Christmas, Piece by Piece is a celebration of precision, patience, and the visual richness that emerges when traditional holiday color is explored through Martee Patton’s interpretation of the Starry Sampler pattern.
Created entirely by Martee Patton, who both pieced and quilted the work, the quilt brings together a collection of individually constructed blocks using the English Paper Piecing technique. Each block stands as its own composition—stars, rings, floral-like forms, and geometric arrangements shifting from one square to the next—yet the repeated palette of deep red, evergreen, cream, and gold creates a strong sense of unity across the whole.
The fabrics from We Love Christmas Metallics 2025, designed by Stof Fabrics for Blank Fabrics, lend the surface a richness that becomes increasingly apparent at close range. Delicate metallic accents catch the light across holly, foliage, stars, ornaments, and other seasonal motifs, adding subtle shimmer without overwhelming the piecing itself.
One of the most engaging aspects of the quilt is the contrast between repetition and individuality. The blocks share a common visual language, but no two resolve in quite the same way. Some emphasize strong central stars. Others form rings or medallions. Still others depend on negative space and contrast to create movement. Together, they read almost like a collection of small studies gathered into one larger work.
The red sashing gives the composition structure and warmth, framing each block while allowing it to retain its own identity. Around the perimeter, the deep green border broadens the palette and gives the quilt a strong visual finish. The striped binding adds one final note of movement, carrying all of the principal colors around the edge in a narrow rhythmic line.
Martee’s quilting introduces another layer of texture across the surface without competing with the complexity of the piecing. Curving stitched lines travel through the blocks and borders, softening the geometry and giving the quilt a sense of continuity from one section to the next.
The reverse offers its own quiet reward: a deep green holiday print that echoes the front without trying to duplicate it. Paired with the striped binding, it creates a thoughtful finish that feels complete from either side.
English Paper Piecing is often admired for its precision, but in Christmas, Piece by Piece, that precision becomes part of something larger. The careful assembly, the repeated hand-shaped forms, and the restrained holiday palette all contribute to a work that feels both traditional and highly personal.
It is a quilt built from individual moments of attention—and the finished piece allows us to see how beautifully those moments can accumulate.
