Class Summary:
This pattern, from Deb Heatherly, is an excellent way to learn how to use the Half Rectangle Trim Tool.  As we begin to construct the large blocks that make up the quilt, we’ll learn how all the markings on the ruler are used to create perfect Half Rectangle units that help you keep those points from getting buried in a seam.
As you choose fabrics for this class, consider the look of the pattern photo and the store sample.  The pattern photo shows a sample created with just two colors and is very striking because of the contrast.  Our store sample was created with Floral Song from Lewis and Irene and was chosen for the variety of colors to create a softer look for this quilt. I used 8 fat quarters plus a little extra for the center squares and cornerstones.  You’ll also need yardage for the borders.

There are many additional patterns that make use of Half Rectangles units from Deb’s Cats N Quilts Designs including Exploding Stars, Aperture, Row-Deo, Twisted Stars and many others.

Before Class Assignment:
  • Purchase the Tumbleweed pattern (not included in class fee) and Half Rectangle Trim Tool at Sewendipitous®. (Don’t discard the paper wrapped around the tool as it contains essential instructions.)
  • Check the fabric requirements in the pattern and purchase the needed fabrics. The pattern is written for using two colors so you’ll have to do a little math to figure out what you’ll need if using more colors.  I recommend using fat quarters - this will give you a little extra in case of cutting mistakes and you’ll have less fabric left over.
  • Keep in mind the center squares in the blocks as well as the cornerstones in the sashing and choose fabrics for those accordingly.
  • Please starch all of your fabrics.  This helps greatly with cutting and pressing while we work.
  • Use the pattern instructions to cut your fabrics as indicated but do not do any sewing.  Our class time is where all the tips and tricks essential to the block construction are given.
